WHY STUDENTS LOVE THIS MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARY LESSON

Instead of sitting through an orientation packed with information, students get up and explore the library for themselves. This middle school library lesson helps students locate the places, resources, and services they are likely to need throughout the school year.

Choose the hunt length that works for your schedule and students. The 12-location hunt is the quickest option, the 18-location hunt provides a middle-length experience, and the 25-location hunt is the full-length option. Each hunt uses a different quotation from classic literature for the final secret message.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THIS LIBRARY ORIENTATION SCAVENGER HUNT?

Choose QR or No-Tech for every hunt length.

In the QR version, students scan a code at each location to reveal a secret word.

In the No-Tech version, the secret word is printed directly on the location card.

Either way, students record their words on the grid and use them to decipher the quotation at the end.

THIS LIBRARY ORIENTATION SCAVENGER HUNT INCLUDES:

  • 12-location, 18-location, and 25-location hunts
  • QR Code versions for all three hunt lengths
  • No-Tech versions for all three hunt lengths
  • Editable location cards
  • Editable student scavenger hunt grids
  • Student Directions presentation for the QR version
  • Student Directions presentation for the No-Tech version
  • PowerPoint files
  • Google Slides versions
  • Print-ready PDFs
  • Suggested library locations
  • Location Key for recording your customized locations and secret words
  • Detailed setup directions
  • QR code test page

BACK TO SCHOOL LIBRARY SETUP & TECHNOLOGY

Customize the activity for your own library by typing your locations onto the cards and scavenger hunt grid. You might use locations such as the book return, graphic novels, copier, fire exit, self-checkout station, nonfiction, or any other places and resources your students need to know.

For the QR option, students need a tablet or cell phone with a camera. An internet connection is not needed to reveal the secret words. If devices are unavailable or you simply prefer a screen-free activity, use the included No-Tech version instead.

This back to school library resource is designed to be flexible: choose the number of locations, choose QR or No-Tech, and customize the locations to match your library.

WHAT WILL STUDENTS DO?

Students receive a scavenger hunt grid and move around the library locating the places and resources you selected. At each stop, they find a secret word—either by scanning the QR code or reading it directly from the No-Tech card.

After collecting all the words, students use them to decipher a quotation from classic literature. Each hunt length features a different book:

  • 12 locations – The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
  • 18 locations – The Odyssey by Homer
  • 25 locations – Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

The quotations add a literary twist while students learn their way around the library. For each quote, you can find the context, speaker, and where to find the quote in the Slide Notes area of the two presentations.

WILL THIS WORK FOR A SUB?

I do not recommend this as a last-minute sub lesson. The location cards need to be customized, printed, and placed around your library before students begin. Once the hunt is set up, however, the Student Directions presentation walks students through the activity.

This Library Orientation Scavenger Hunt gives you multiple ways to adapt orientation to your schedule, technology, and library space. Whether you choose 12, 18, or 25 locations, students get an active introduction to the library rather than simply hearing about it.

It also works especially well as a back to school library activity because students learn where things are before they need to find them independently later in the year.
