Once again, Election Day is upon us! As always, this one promises to be emotionally-charged, and well, a circus. Though I no longer live in the USA, I do watch our election process from afar. Like it or lump it, it’s definitely interesting.
Our students and teachers will soon be asking for library books about Election Day. Help make these books easier to find by creating a display or scrolling slideshow of the books in your library. For everything below, I am referencing USA elections since I am American and understand this process far better than I understand other countries’ elections.
IDEAS FOR CREATING SIMPLE ELECTION DAY BOOK DISPLAYS
- Cover a table or display area with a tablecloth – you can use solid patriotic colors, or shop your local dollar store around July 4th for patriotic prints
- Use small or medium-sized boxes as “risers.” You can cover these with the tablecloth or wrap them in colored butcher paper. If you wrap boxes, save them for future displays!
- Add books from your library. Make sure you have multiple height levels to create visual interest.
- Decorate with props such as: streamers, construction paper stars, and “I Voted!” stickers or buttons
MORE TIPS FOR DISPLAYING BOOKS ABOUT ELECTION DAY
- I personally prefer to create displays about the election process, rather than specific candidates currently running for office. If you do include books about specific candidates, be sure to be balanced and represent all major candidates equally.
- Add an interactive “election” of your own! Put out 2-3 empty glass jars, one to represent something to vote on. This can be anything from actual candidates, local issues, or favorite foods. Add small pom-poms or marbles for students to place in a jar as their “vote.”
- High school libraries may want to also set up a “how to register to vote” section. This could include voter registration cards (if allowed in your jurisdiction), requirements for voter registration, how and where to turn registration cards in, and deadlines for registering. You can check guidelines for Voter Registration in high schools here.
SLIDESHOW: BOOKS ABOUT ELECTION DAY AND VOTING
Don’t have space or energy for an Election Day library display? No worries! I’ve created a FREE Election Day Books scrolling slideshow of books for you! This slideshow includes books about elections for all grade levels, starting with picture books and ending with YA books. I did not include any books about candidates currently running for office.
This Election Day Digital Booktalk slideshow focuses on books about the USA election process. It includes books about voting, the voting process, and voting rights in US history.
To download the Election Day Digital Booktalk, click the link underneath the slideshow below. You may need to go to FILE-Make a Copy (tip-right in Canva) to add an editable copy to your Canva account.
Many of the included titles have starred professional reviews. Some have also won book awards, so it can also make a great collection development tool.
As with all my book recommendations and booktalk materials, I only include titles that received at least two positive professional reviews on Titlewave. The one exception on this presentation is the middle grade title Presidential Elections and Other Cool Facts: Understanding How Our Country Picks Its President by Syl Sobel. This book has no reviews on Titlewave, but Amazon quotes an SLJ starred review and a positive Youth Services Book Review.
