ABOUT THIS THESEUS AND THE MINOTAUR LESSON

ZEUS AND EUROPA (BULL STORY #1)

  • Zeus and Europa are the Minotaur’s grandparents.
  • Zeus turned himself into a bull and kidnapped Europa.
  • He made her the Queen of Crete.
  • She and Zeus had a son named Minos, who grew up to become king.https://www.dropbox.com/s/636ie9jw1a5e6rg/Lesson%205–Theseus%20and%20the%20Minotaur.zip?dl=1

THE CRETAN BULL (BULL STORY #2)

  • Don’t worry! The original Greek story is quite racy, but this version is PG. I leave out the “hollow cow” part of the story.
  • This tells the story of how Queen Pasiphae (King Minos’ wife) came to fall in love with a bull.
  • She later gives birth to Asterion, a.k.a. the Minotaur.
  • Daedalus builds the Labyrinth as a prison for the Minotaur.

THESEUS AND THE MINOTAUR (BULL STORY #3)

  • This is the longest part of the story.
  • Describes the death of Minos’ favored son, Androgeus, in Athens.
  • To avenge his son’s death, Minos required Athens to send 14 young people as sacrifices to the Minotaur every year.
  • Theseus, son of King Aegeus, volunteers as a sacrifice. He plans to slay the Minotaur and save everyone.
  • King Aegeus asks Theseus to change the ship sails to white if he lives.
  • Ariadne falls for Theseus and helps him.
  • Theseus slays the Minotaur and uses string to find way out of Labyrinth.
  • Theseus and Ariadne marry.
  • Theseus abandons Ariadne.
  • Ariadne eventually marries Dionysus.
  • Theseus returns to Athens but forgets to change the sails to white.
  • King Aegeus falls to his death in what is now the Aegean Sea.

ASTRONOMY TERMS FROM THIS STORY

  • Europa (Jupiter’s moon)
  • Taurus (constellation)
  • Corona Borealis (constellation)
