FAST FACTS ABOUT THIS AROUND THE WORLD READING CHALLENGE:

  • Recommended for: Grades 3-7
  • Challenge Duration: one library lesson to explain the challenge; a few months, up to one school year, to implement the Reading Challenge
  • Formats: PPT, Google Slides, PDF
  • Editable: YES, all text is editable
  • Created for school librarians but can be used in classrooms, too.

***Please note that this Read Around the World Challenge does not include the books! I’ve got lists of over 250 picture books here, but I cannot include the actual books due to copyright restrictions.

IMPORTANT! This Around the World Reading Challenge is not a quick lesson to do “on the fly.” After one initial introductory lesson, the Around the World Reading Challenge is designed to last at least a few months, possibly up to an entire school year. It makes a great passive library program to run school-wide or for specific grade levels.

TO PREPARE YOUR AROUND THE WORLD READING CHALLENGE

  • Check your school and/or public library for international picture books. Allow time to order more if needed.
  • Decide if you will do the Reading Challenge exactly as I’ve described. Make edits to the introduction presentation and passports as needed.
  • Copy and prepare the Reading Passports. You will need one Reading Passport per student (6 or 12 pages, depending if you use the full- or half-page version; both are included in this file). If using the half-page passport, you may want to staple it in the middle so it doesn’t fall apart easily.
  • Copy the bookmarks as needed. I usually just keep these in the library for anyone to take.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  • You will need lots of international picture books! Please do not attempt this Around the World Reading Challenge if you do not have a variety of picture books from around the world. I’ve provided you with a growing list of over 250 recommended titles, separated by country and region, in the resource.
  • Avery 5160 labels for flag labels (you’ll need at least 8 sheets)
  • PowerPoint, Google Slides, or PDF for editing
  • color printer
  • ability to make copies of student Reading Passports and bookmarks

HOW IT WORKS:

  1. Students read international picture books.
  2. Students record their picture books in their Reading Passport.* They also color the country they read about on the map.
  3. For every 10 international picture books they read, students turn in their passport for a small prize.

*One Reading Passport can record up to 30 international picture books (3 per continent and region).

I give three levels of reading with prize suggestions in the directions. You do not have to do your Around the World Reading Challenge this way; it is just a suggestion.
