PART I – WHOLE CLASS DISCUSSION:
Part I is the whole-class discussion. The slides walk you through the entire whole-class library lesson, from start to finish. It’s a great introduction to endangered animals, their classifications, why they are endangered, and what we can do to help.
- 3 recommended library read-alouds. Each book has 1-2 video link recommendations to accompany the story.
- Sign language sign — “earth” (how-to link)
- April 22 is Earth Day (this is the only Earth Day slide in the presentation)
- Definition of species
- Brief descriptions of 5 classifications of endangered species: least-concern, vulnerable, endangered, critically-endangered, and extinct. Each group includes multiple species that belong in that group.
- Real photos of several endangered animals
- Threats to animals (pollution, habitat loss, poaching, pet trade) – more threats are listed in Part II
- How can we help the endangered animals?
- Slide for your read-aloud (paste the book cover on the slide).
- Checkout reminders slide — add your own reminders!
- “What Should We Do Now?” slide — This is very clear instructions on what students should be doing after the lesson.
PART II – SCROLLING SLIDESHOW
The second part is the scrolling slideshow. Set them on a timer to scroll on a screen during library checkout.
Students can use the scrolling slides to complete one of the two Scavenger Hunts. All images and information in the slides relate to endangered animals.
