  • Lesson Duration: 30 minute introductory library lesson; 2-3 weeks for students to create their bookmarks; plus one or more days for school-wide voting

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL GET:

  • presentation to introduce students to the Bookmark Contest and the rules
  • two colorful promotional posters (these are the only parts that are not editable)
  • two directions posters
  • bookmark art template
  • voting ballots
  • directions and lots of tips for librarians and teachers

STUDENT DIRECTIONS PRESENTATION

  • This is the students’ first introduction to the school-wide Bookmark Contest.
  • includes 8 slides, all with images of animals reading
  • Allow about 30 minutes to introduce – this is perfect for library lesson time
  • Includes a section on trademarks!

TRADEMARK DISCUSSION INCLUDED!

I love using the bookmark contest as a teachable moment about unauthorized use of trademarked characters and logos.

This is a life skill that many adults often do not understand or adhere to, and it can get them into legal trouble one day.

Legal issues aside, not allowing trademarked characters usually leads to more original, creative, student-designed bookmarks.

If you prefer to allow students to create freely without restrictions on trademarks, just eliminate these two slides from the presentation.

BOOKMARK ART TEMPLATE

  • Students use the bookmark template to design their bookmarks.
  • You can base the designs on a theme, or just let the kids go wild with their designs.
  • fully-editable in PPT, PDF, and Google Slides
  • Includes a place to number each bookmark for voting
  • Allow 2-3 weeks for students to decorate bookmarks and turn in their favorite bookmark design.
  • Designating a creation station area in the library will increase the number of entries you receive.

BOOKMARK CONTEST VOTING BALLOT TEMPLATES

  • Includes 4 different ballot designs
  • all text is editable in PPT, PDF, and Google Slides
  • Students vote by bookmark number (there is a designated place to number each bookmark on the templates)

BOOKMARK CONTEST ADVERTISEMENT POSTERS

  • 2 colorful display posters to advertise the Bookmark Contest around school – these are NOT editable
  • 2 directions posters – these are semi-editable. My directions are there as an example, but you can edit them to suit your school. The background images are not editable.
  • The 2 directions posters are great to put in a creation station area if you choose to have one in the library.

AFTER VOTING (HOW I DO IT):

  • Tally the votes!
  • The bookmarks that receive the most votes should be printed professionally through a local printer such as Staples or Office Depot. Be sure to use high-quality, thick bookmark paper. I usually print 50 bookmarks in 12-18 designs, depending on how many entries we receive.
  • The winning bookmark artists each get 15 of their own design to give to family and friends.
  • The remaining 35 of each bookmark stay in the library to give out to students.
