REVIEW: I am so sad to say that I am quitting this book about 1/3 of the way in. And believe me, it was a struggle to even get that far.
I am a HUGE fan of the first two books, so I was thrilled to read My Not So Super Sweet Life. Really, this one should have been a slam-dunk for me. Maybe it’s because it’s been a couple of years since I first fell in love with Cat’s story. Maybe it’s because I was hoping for more time-travel (unlike the first two, there is no time travel in this one). Maybe it’s because the romance between Lucas and Cat is already established, making this story more about Cat and her mommy issues than anything else. For whatever reason, I really wasn’t feeling it this time.
I always know a story is on its way to becoming a DNF (did not finish) when I start checking Goodreads ratings while still reading the book. My Not So Super Sweet Life has lots of 4- and 5- star ratings. In light of the stellar reviews, I kept reading, thinking it has to get better. But I just couldn’t make myself care. Cat’s mother is a crazy, selfish, horrible person, and I don’t understand why Cat would continue to give her the time of day.
I could also foresee plenty of drama when Alessandra sees Cat’s half-brother Ransom for the first time. He looks so much like Alessandra’s 16th Century brother Cipriano that Cat thinks he IS Cipriano when she first meets him. But honestly, should having a look-alike in the modern century really come as a surprise to anyone in this story? Several the ancient relatives look like their modern-day counterparts. Lucas looks just like Lorenzo. Ransom looks just like Cipriano. Cat’s mother looks just like Alessandra’s mother. And what’s up with that anyway? After nearly four centuries has passed, the family still looks like “doppelgangers” of one another? Even siblings–heck, in many cases, twins–don’t look like “doppelgangers” of one another.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Despite high Goodreads ratings, this one was a DNF for me.
STATUS IN MY LIBRARY: On order. My new school doesn’t have this series at all, so I have ordered all three books.
