Recommend A...Book Published in 2010

This post is based on the concept of "Recommend a..." from the Chick Loves Lit blog. This week's meme is "Recommend a...BOOK PUBLISHED IN 2010."

Ah, 2010. You gave us the birth of the iPad and ObamaCare. The Haiti and Chilean earthquakes. Snowmaggedon. The Winter Olympics and the BP Oil Spill. A Chilean mine collapse and miraculous rescue of 33 men. Mel Gibson yelled at his kids, Prince William got engaged, and Lindsey Lohan went to jail.

In 2010, my older son started Kindergarten and my younger son was diagnosed with asthma. My 14-year old cat died. My husband replaced our nasty old carpet with gorgeous hardwood. I hired a new library aide. And as always, I spent plenty of time reading some of the awesome YA reads born in 2010:

"2010" Recommendation #1
You Against Me by Jenny Downham

You Against Me features the unlikely romance between Mikey, whose sister recently accused a boy of date rape, and Ellie, the girl whose brother is the accused. Mikey first meets Ellie when he goes to her house to beat up her brother Tom upon his release from jail. He gains access to the house by pretending to be one of the party caterers, but he decides this party is not the right place to beat up Tom. He leaves instead, Ellie never knowing who he really is. Ellie and Mikey continue to have chance encounters as Mikey attempts to avenge his sister's rape, and things heat up as the two fall for each other.

I loved this book and read most of it in one sitting. The characters are imperfect and likeable, and the shades of truth surrounding the rape, believable. I always love a book told through alternating perspectives, and for You Against Me that format really works to show Mikey's blind fury over his sister's accusations and Ellie's fierce loyalty to her brother. Love, love, love!

"2010" Recommendation #2
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

What would you do if you knew today would be your last day to live? Would you do things differently? Would you take some chances, show more kindness, try to save your own life? On the day she dies, Samantha Kingston has everything going for her--she's popular, has a gorgeous boyfriend, and generally has the best of everything. So when she dies in a car accident, she does not expect to wake up again, the same morning of her death, with the chance to do the day all over again. Seven times.

A page-turner to the very end, Before I Fall has it all--mystery, romance, suspense, and self-discovery. Even though Samantha relives the same day's events over and over, I anxiously turned the pages, wondering what could possibly happen next. I love Oliver's writing style, both in Before I Fall and Delirium.

  1. I always love to know what a book is about before I decide to purchase it for my class. I think they would love Before I Fall, but You Against Me sounds a bit too strong for my middle school students. Thanks for the recommendations
